A-1 Pictures Studio Announces New Anime Feature Film

A-1 Pictures, the powerhouse behind hit anime like Sword Art Online and Solo Leveling, is back in the spotlight with a major announcement! The renowned studio has revealed its next big project: an anime film adaptation of the bestselling Japanese novel Kusunoki no Bannin (Keeper of the Camphor Tree) by acclaimed author Keigo Higashino.

According to Mantan Web, the film is set to premiere in Japan in 2026. Originally published in 2020, the novel has already surpassed one million copies sold, earning a spot among modern Japanese literary hits.

The story centers on Reito Naoi, a man abruptly fired from his job and unjustly arrested. Just when all hope seems lost, a mysterious lawyer introduces him to Senshu Yanagisawa, the head of a powerful company. As he takes on this strange role, he uncovers secrets that intertwine with his own past in unexpected ways.

A-1 Pictures has also dropped the first key visual for the upcoming film, giving fans a glimpse into the emotional and mysterious world of Keeper of the Camphor Tree.

What makes this upcoming film even more exciting is the return of Tomohiko Ito as director—best known for directing Sword Art Online Seasons 1 and 2. This will be the first-ever anime adaptation of a Keigo Higashino work.

In a statement, Ito shared his personal connection to the story, explaining how Camphor Tree reflects themes of fragility, legacy, and gratitude.

“People disappear suddenly, and it’s impossible for the status quo to continue forever… Now that I’m over 40, I’ve come to understand the feelings of those left behind.”

Ito also emphasized the film as a tribute—not just to family—but to everyone who shapes our lives, even those we may only meet briefly.

“I want to pass on this feeling to the next generation.”

Ito’s impressive career also includes roles as assistant director on Death Note and collaboration with Mamoru Hosoda on Summer Wars, showcasing his range and emotional depth as a storyteller.

🔥 A-1 Pictures Continues to Dominate the Anime Scene

The studio’s latest hit, Solo Leveling Season 2: Arise From the Shadow, wrapped up on March 29, 2025, and is already being hailed as one of the standout series of Winter 2025.
