Death Stranding Anime in the Works According to Hideo Kojima

🎬 Kojima Confirms Animation Project

In a recent Vogue Japan interview, Hideo Kojima confirmed that a Death Stranding anime is in development. He didn’t clarify whether the animation is Japanese, but he emphasized that it’s a separate project from the upcoming film.

📽️ Separate from the Live-Action Movie

Unlike the anime, the live-action adaptation is moving forward with A24. Director Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One) will lead the film, while Square Peg, the production company founded by Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, handles production.

Kojima Productions previously expanded its reach in 2021 by launching a Los Angeles-based division focused on music, TV, and film. This move clearly showed Kojima’s ambition to push storytelling beyond games.

🎮 Death Stranding’s Legacy So Far

Death Stranding originally launched for PlayStation 4 in November 2019. Kojima Productions brought the game to PC in July 2020, followed by a Director’s Cut for PS5 in September 2021. The PC version of the Director’s Cut dropped in March 2022.

Meanwhile, the upcoming sequel Death Stranding 2: On the Beach will arrive on June 26, 2025, for PlayStation 5. Fans can expect a star-studded cast, including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Troy Baker, Elle Fanning, and Shioli Kutsuna.

🧪 Anime Teased, But Few Details Yet

Although Kojima hasn’t revealed many specifics, his mention of the anime signals something major. He previously spoke to Variety in 2024 and hinted that animation was one of the many creative avenues Kojima Productions wanted to explore.

So far, the anime has no official studio, release date, or promotional material. Nevertheless, the mere announcement has sparked curiosity and speculation online.

⌛ What This Means for Death Stranding Fans

This new anime project expands the Death Stranding universe even further. With a sequel game and live-action film on the way, fans now have three distinct formats to look forward to.

For now, all eyes are on Death Stranding 2. But clearly, Kojima’s creative journey has only just begun—and anime is now officially part of it.
